What is Environmentally Sustainable Medicine?

Stillpoint Family Health Services (SFHS) uses Environmentally Sustainable Medicine (ESM) as a foundation of our practice. ESM or Green Health Care is a new model of health care where personal health and the health of our physical environment/planet are seen as interdependent; we cannot have one without the other. ESM seeks to provide better health care while simultaneously protecting our limited environmental and medical resources. SFHS understands this interconnection and seeks to inform and educate you—take a look at the core principles of ESM .

Many studies have shown that conventional health care practices have greatly contributed to the deterioration of our environment in many ways. For example through the overconsumption of huge quantities of our limited natural resources where many of its waste products actually do harm, through over-prescribing, misuse and improper disposal of pharmaceuticals, through the incineration of bio-hazardous waste, and the utilization of medical products containing environmental toxins—STILLPOINT uses ESM practices to regain/maintain your health without negatively impacting our fragile environment, and the health of our neighbors.

At STILLPOINT, we see that many chronic imbalances in health can be a result of our disconnection with nature. The imbalances express themselves as toxicity and deficiency. Reconnecting with nature can do much to regain our health. In indigenous populations, there is a long history of understanding our physical connection with and the four sacred elements: waterearthfire and air. Stillpoint believes it would greatly benefit modern society to relearn and use this traditional knowledge, bringing this awareness, connection and balance back into our lives.

Core Principles of ESM:

  1. Renewable and non-toxic
  2. Affordable and accessible
  3. Adaptable and flexible
  4. Safe and harmless
  5. Accessible to all people
  6. Protective of the quality of life on earth the environment and earth's natural resources
  7. Synergistic with human health and planetary well-being
  8. Connected with the web of life
  9. Understands interconnectivity between environment/human health
